A roller coaster of a year

We are in the middle of 2013, whose first half brought Finnair Cargo both positive and negative experiences. What will the second half of the year bring? Optimists say that the period of September to December will bring improvements, but some also say that the second half of the year will remain “soft,” and are already looking into 2014 for improvements in the air cargo market.

One of the biggest recent developments for Finnair Cargo was the introduction of our second hub, Brussels, in the beginning of April. In the beginning of June we added a weekly service with an A340 passenger aircraft to improve our frequencies and capacity out of Brussels. Our plan has been to develop our service to and from Europe, improve lead times and take the next steps on our strategic road to being one of the top five preferred cargo carriers between Europe and Northeast Asia.

In mid-June we added passenger flights to Xi`an and Hanoi. Our expanding network to Asia offers new solutions for many forwarders in Asia and Europe. Thanks for the support!

Optimizing Finnair Cargo’s network is one of the most challenging areas of the business. Demand is volatile, changing from week to week, and at times it seems that demand in certain realms just “hits a brick wall.” We aim to neutralize volatility by continuing to develop our product range with clearly defined, specialized products that meet the needs of the industry.

We are also working to offer more transparent information regarding Finnair Cargo. We will be launching our green reporting tool during the third quarter of 2013 to better serve forwarders: it will offer AWB-level emissions reporting based on actual flight performance (fuel usage, flight load, etc.). We are working to be a 100% certified Cargo 2000 Carrier by the end of the third quarter, and plan to use this information as a quality measurement standard both internally and externally.

Summer is the time to “charge our personal batteries” and get ready for the second half of the year. Have a good one!
